The P3s received their Green award badges. The Boys put in their best effort in performing the drill to receive an award. Though not perfect by any means it was a good start and serious effort made. The devotion was conducted by our acting Chaplain, Pastor John Wong. Following that, the P3s enjoyed their outdoor cooking session and the P4s and P5s had more of their knots practice. At about 9.45 we had the overseas trip briefing conducted by Sanath from Synergy Dynamics. Those who have signed up are certainly looking forward to the trip.

The P4s and P5s started their knots training in preparation for next year's Adventure Quest. Mr Jack See one of the grandparents conducted the instruction. They learnt about the basics of knotting such as the end, loop and blight and learnt 3 useful knots (reef, clove hitch and bowline) though we only had time to practise 2 of them. The devotion on Humility in Knowledge was conducted by Mr Cheang Kok Kheong, our latest volunteer officer. The Boys learnt how they could remain humble even when they are knowledgeable by deliberately having an attitude of humility towards other people rather than being pre-occupied with themselves. The finals of the captain's ball was an eventful match, with Integrity winning the title ahead of Reverence with a 5-2 score line. The forms for the year end Sharity Gift Box was also handed out to the Boys.

The devotion was conducted Mr Ong on Humility in Service. The Boys were taught many aspects of humility and learnt that humility is clearly shown when we serve others without expecting anything in return. Next week's final will see Reverence playing Integrity. Congratulations to the two teams. Well done for a fine effort in teamwork and leadership.

The overseas trip to Kota Tinggi was announced and letters and forms handed out. Please submit all forms by Wed 4 Nov. Participation is on a first come first served basis. A total of 50 places are available for the BB Boys, GB Girls and parents and siblings. Subsidy of $100 is available only for BB Boys and GB Girls from NYPS. The nett amount is $200 per BB Boy/GB Girl. The rest of the family will be $300 per pax. The trip is 4D and 3N. For Boys who missed the Sat parade, they are to collect their forms on Monday from Mr Chiu Po Ping.

News: BB Cares Outing 3 Oct

It was a happy occasion for both beneficiaries from the Association of Persons with Special Needs and our Boys and some of their parents and siblings who joined us. On the whole, I believe everyone enjoyed the day.

For the first time, indeed, we saw much contributions from the Boys beginning with their timely arrival at NYPS to load the logistics for the day, each squad being responsible for some of the stores. On our journey to APSN the Boys finalised their preparations, which began in previous week's parade, to be the hosts for the bus journey from APSN (at Jalan Tembusu) to Labrador Nature Reserve.

When we arrived at APSN, we found our guests were all ready and excitely waiting, nicely grouped into 2 groups, one for each bus. On the trip to Labrador Park, some of the Boys were engaged either in leading songs, telling jokes and riddles, helping to entertain our guests.

When we arrived at the Reserve, the 2 groups alighted and was given a short guided tour of the ruins of the old Fort Pasir Panjang on the way down to the beach. We arrived at the beach ahead of our planned 10.00 am start time. After unloading the stores from the bus, the 2 groups had concurrent activities. The first bus had their kite flying session and the second bus, the group games (the ball through the tunnel and ping pong ball ferrying games). Though we were not quite successful flying the kites because of the lack of wind,, there was no lack of enthusiasm judging from the energy expended by the Boys. After a short break for snacks, the two groups switched activities. This was followed by a sumptious lunch. The food tasted especially good after all the physical activities. Two squads, Humility and Reverence stood out particularly for the wonderful interaction with the members from APSN.

The programme ended with our vesper held at the beach and notice for the overseas trip handed to the Boys. After cleaning up the park, we headed back to APSN on the buses. However, the spirits was even higher as the Boys and APSN members were even more enthusiastic with either the singing or riddle and jokes. We parted ways at APSN at 1.00 am, hoping to have another eventful day next year. Our journey back to Nanyang was delayed by heavy traffic and we only arrived at NYPS about 1.45 to 1.50 pm.

In spite of a few incidents of having to discipline some Boys, the officers were greatly encouraged by the service shown by some of the Boys and especially the effort shown by all the Boys in engaging our friends as hosts. Well done Boys and hope we will do even better next year!

It was a day well spent. Our hope is for greater participation from the parents next year.

The Boys learnt during devotion about Jesus' teaching and example of helping others. A briefing on the BB Cares activity on Oct 3 was also given to them. The Purple and Red badges for those who achieved them were given out. Congratulations to those who made it! Due to lack of time we had to cancel the captain ball's game.

The devotion topics for 5 and 19 Sep were on the Good Samaritan (by Mrs Kim Lim) and Gentleness (by Mr Amos Lum). The new Squad and Assistant Squad Leaders had their training in giving commands for the Opening Parades. As usual, the Boys enjoyed their captain's ball matches. We hope to capture more of the action soon!

For the 5 Sep parade, the Boys who could not finish building the IKEA book shelf got to complete it as the spare parts was short during the Learn A Skill session.

We had a new officer joining us on 5 Sep. Mr Cheang Kok Kheong who was a former captain of a senior company has come onboard as one of our officers.

Planning has got under way for the 3 Oct outing with the Association of Persons with Special Needs as part of our BB Cares event.

The new appointments for Squad and Assistant Squad Leaders were announced officially and the Boys were given their lanyards. Madam Juliet from GB gave the devotion, sharing on the Armour of God. The P4s and P5s started on their new award badges: Blue and Silver.

The short singspiration was followed by the devotion was based on a veggie tale story about Friendship. The Boys learnt about how to be a good friend by being aware of the their friend's interest and also listening well to their friends instead of being occupied by self.

Today was Learn A Skill. The P5 Boys got to build shelves for the BB Den. The P3s and P4s had practice for the kite flying activity in preparation for the possible BB Cares event scheduled on 19 Sept. This is subject confirmation at a later date.

We finally had our parade this week with the go ahead from the school.

The devotion was on the topic of self control. A simple story about Dr Ben Carson was shared with the Boys to show how self control came about with God's help for Dr Ben Carson. The video clip used can be found at YouTube. They were taught the need to exercise control over their speech and anger, amongst others. They were also taught how parents play an important role in guiding them to do so and Dr Ben Carson's story shows how pivotal this can be.

News: Enrolment Ceremony

The Enrolment Ceremony this year was held at Woodlands Secondary School. A total of 37 Boys including five P6's turned up for the ceremony on 23 May. The Color Badges were awarded to the Boys before the ceremony. For the Boys it was hard work in the morning as they rehearsed for the Ceremony in the afternoon. However, due to the rain, the parade was rescheduled indoors with the Guards of Honour representing all the companies and the Boys got to participate only in the service portion in the school hall. Eventhough they did not get a change this year to participate in the parade, we hope that through the experience in participating in a parade rehearsal they have learnt the comradeship with other members in the BB/GB movement.

NYPS's vice principal Mrs Jocelyn Lim was present to award our P6's the Certicate of Appreciation for their years of faithful membership and participation. Watch out in this blog for the photos when the are ready!

For the P6's who missed out on the Ceremony, please collect your certificates anytime from Tuesday onwards from your teacher in charge, Mr Chiu Po Ping.

Finally, a big thank you to Mrs Jocelyn Lim and all the parents who came to support and encourage the Boys in your participation.

The parade marked the 2nd last parade for our P6 Boys. The Enrolment Ceremony on 23 May will be their last parade. We had a send off party for them and they receive their badge awards. The devotion was on the topic of Goodness. Goodness is possible because God is good. Hence, with God's help, we can be good. It involves right action done with the right attitude and is tied to a right purpose (one that is good).

News: 4 and 18 Apr Parades

The highlight of the 4th Apr parade saw the soccer finals between the two top teams in the league, Caring and Integrity. Though the Caring squad has performed consistently well over weeks to top the table, Integrity was the better team for the day and won by a 3 to 1 margin. The match was filled with several moments of exciting soccer. Congratulations to the Integrity squad. Each of the winning squad members were given a special BB water bottle.

On 18th April, we had a surprise match for the Boys. This time, they were playing the officers. There were two teams of Boys selected to play against the officers. The matches ended 3-1 and 2-0 in the officer's favour. Jacob Lau, one of our old Boys who graduated 2 years ago turned up and played for the officer's team as well as 2 Boys who volunteered to be the goal keepers for the officers.

This brings our soccer league to an end and we hope the Boys have really enjoyed the league.

The devotions for the two weeks were on Kindness by Barry Sim and the significance of Good Friday and Easter by Juliet Ang.

The Enrolment Service is due in 23 May 2009. We started the drill training on 18 April in preparation for the occasion.

The highlight for this parade was certainly our annual BB Week which kicked off on the following day (8 Mar Sunday) as well as the final preparations by our two teams who who will be representing us at the Brigade Level competition for Adventure Quest. The devotion was by Dr. Kevin Kwok who spoke on the topic of peace. The main message was that those who live by God's true wisdom should relate peacefully with people around us. The soccer finals was postponed because of the BB Week administration.

BB Week

The BB Week is the only time in the year when the Boys' Brigade Boys, Officers and Volunteers raise funds for the company's activities for the entire year. The duration of this event is about a month long. Each Boy present collected his 2 cards which will have to be returned on 4 Apr together with the cash collected for the cards in the given envelope as well as 4 leaflets for donors who wish to donate larger sums and a letter and instruction sheet printed different sides of the same A4 sheet of paper. The target collection for each boy is $200. An announcement regarding an information oversight has been given by the HQ regarding leaflet donations: Donors using the leaflets would need to write the expiry date of their credit cards in the leaflet as well.

Final Preparations for the BB Adventure Quest

The teams have undergone about 4 to 5 weeks of intensive training to prepare for this event. The training was conducted by Mr. Barry Sim, Mr Jeremy Ow and our parent (rather, grandparent) volunteer, Mr Jack See. You can see some of the efforts made by the Boys in the pictures below. Whatever the results of the competition next week, we are thankful for all the hard work put in by the trainers and the Boys. Good work. We hope the Boys have learnt and grown through the process.

The New Boys turned up in their uniforms today and they certainly looked smart :). As we draw near to the end of our soccer league, team work and participation of the Boys is beginning to show. Well done Boys for the team work and friendly competition! We were particularly inspired by the Trustworthy team who overcame their smaller numbers 5 versus their opponents 9 to carve out a win in their soccer league match. In view of that, two bonus points have been awarded to the Trustworthy team for this week for their team work. The devotion was given by Mdm Juliet Ang on the parable of the Prodigal Son. They Boys learnt of God's love that allows them a second chance. We all may make mistakes in life along the way. The important thing is to have the courage to turn around and go on the right path once we realise that.

For the next parade, we will be having our first league soccer finals: Caring vs Integrity.

The parade was a special day for our new Boys. They made their way to the BB Shop to purchase their new uniforms. Hope all you new Boys will look smart next week when you put them on! Mdm Juliet shared from Matthew Chapter 13 on the Parable of the Sower and the Seeds. Briefly summarised, the type of ground represent the manner in which the heart receives Jesus' teachings. The greatest change in our lives occur when our hearts are like the good soil. Finally, keep up with the greater discipline they have shown the past two weeks. Well done!

It was another week of great turnout. Well done Boys! The devotion today was by Ms Juliet Ang. She shared about Jesus' teaching from the parables Matthew 13:44-46 about the kingdom of heaven. Simply summarised, Jesus teaching was about how much greater, the value of the eternal is, over the temporal. There was an extended drill session for the Boys, the purpose being to instill in them a greater discipline when on parade. They were reminded of the importance of bearing and discipline and the need to show respect and gain the respect of others through their conduct.

We had great attendance today. Well done to all the boys! The value shared with the boys today was on Faithfulness in Leadership by Mr. Ong. Briefly summarised, the 'take away' points for the talk on how to be faithful was:

1) Forsake – To be willing to forsake other things to accomplish the assigned goals and desires.
2) Attitude – To have a positive attitude and enjoy what he is doing.
3) Initiative – To accomplish the task even if no one believes in what he is doing by discovering new ways and get new people to help.
4) Try - Faithful people try and try, never give up trying.
5) Honest – To live a life marked by a lifestyle of integrity.

The New Award Class structure kicked in today. Primary 3s on White Badge, Primary 4s on Green Badge, Primary 5s on Blue Badge and the P6s on Silver Badge.

The New boys also started on their Orientation programme doing the BB Boy Member's Handbook.

The Squad Leaders began their Stage 3 drill lessons on giving commands.

A new volunteer, Mdm Ong (a former school principal) joined us this morning. So in addition to Mr Yap (a qualified tour guide) who joined us on the opening parade of the year, we have 2 new volunteers this year.

News: Jan 17 Orientation Parade & Parents Briefing

We had a wonderful turn out of an additional 17 new boys for the Orientation Parade. A Meet the Parents of the New Boys session was held at the same time. Two presentations were given. The first, on the Programme for 2009, was given to all the boys and parents. The second touched on various matters related to the Boys Brigade and the operations of the 42J Company was only given to the parents while the boys got to play ROMANOPOLY, a group game. We introduced our volunteers. The parents and volunteers got to know each other better during the refreshments served at the end of the session.

The value imparted to the Boys today was about love. A simple story was told to illustrate what love is. Simply summarised, love is about giving and being centered on other people's welfare and needs, rather than one's own pleasure. The Boys were encouraged to learn to live out this virtue in their lives by learning to show it to one another, the officers and volunteers, their friends, family members and people who are less privileged in our society.

During squad time, they were asked to reflect on areas of personal growth in character that they would like to sees in their lives during the year and to write these down in duplicate on 2 cards. They kept one card to remind themselves and the other was given to the squad officer to follow up on them in order to encourage them and to help them to change.

A squad based soccer league was introduced for the boys to learn teamwork and commitment.

Welcome to the Nanyang Primary School Boys' Brigade Company's Public Blog. The company is the 42nd Junior Company of the Boys' Brigade of Singapore.

This blog is set up with the purpose of enabling the company's Boys, their parents/guardians as well as other volunteers to keep up to date with the activities of the company.

As the company is largely run by volunteers together with one or two school teachers, this blog will play a vital role in enabling the Boys and their parents/guardians to get the latest information in case they are unable to contact the volunteers or the volunteers are unable to get back immediately to the Boys or their parents/guardians due to work commitments.

The following will take place on this blog:

The Calendar of Events will be kept up to date whenever changes take place.
The latest announcements for the upcoming activities will be posted on this blog.
The latest reports on our activities will be published here as well.
Information frequently needed by parents that can be made public will be posted herel.

Hence, strongly encourage you to save the link to this blog to check the latest information each week at this site. If changes are made later than 8 am on Thursday morning, we will contact you via email. For late and important changes, the volunteers will undertake to inform via sms or phone call to the parents/guardians or the Boys directly. For more details on this matter, click here.
